What the World Population Clock Really Tells Us

The World Population Clock is a mesmerizing little device. You can watch in real time as people are born and die, and you can see how many births and deaths have taken place so far today and for the whole year.

But if we think about these numbers for a moment, we’re going to realize something. They’re not really numbers at all. They’re people. Real, actual people, with lives and personalities and families.

People with souls.

So What Does the World Population Clock Really Tell Us?

It tells us that five people are born every second, and two people die every second. That means that every second, five new souls come into the world who need to hear the Gospel. And every second, two souls enter eternity. Did they know about Jesus? Did anyone ever tell them?

The clock also tells us that 5 out of the 10 most populous countries in the world (China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh) are in the 10/40 window. That means that the countries with the most people inside their borders are also the most unreached countries in the world.

Two deaths every second.

An unreached window filled with a huge portion of the world’s population.

What should we do with this data?

Going and Sending

Jesus commanded us to go into all the nations and share the Gospel with them. If two people die every second, and the largest people groups in the world live inside the 10/40 window, then doesn’t it make sense that we should go and tell?

Yes, we should go – but if we can’t physically leave our own country and go to another one, we should send those who can. For missionaries to be effective, they need funding. Providing those funds is a great way to obey the Great Commission, even if you aren’t able to travel.
